I heard it from my friends about the things you said (2010)

Installation views at Helen Gory Galerie, Melbourne. Paper, cardboard, foamcore, adhesives, spray paint. 1:1 scale models, dimensions variable. Photos: Matthew Stanton.

‘I heard it from my friends about the things you said’ is a sculptural installation that reflects on the shifting space of Berlin as traces of its past disappear through gentrification. Once a common site on streets, in abandoned buildings and in photos of Berlin, hard rubbish motioned to histories of transition, DIY and making-do. As the city has become increasingly gentrified, these objects have slowly disappeared from the streets and reappeared in stores, refashioned as reproductions for the tourist market. ‘I heard it from my friends about the things you said’ reflects on this strange transition of objects, presenting slick paper and foam core models of hard rubbish that are devoid of gritty history and recuperated as fetishised design.
